I am a ceramicist based in the North East of England and I focus my work on hand building techniques.
Throughout my time working with clay, I have gravitated towards hand building techniques. I resonate with these ways of working as I feel as though I am working with the clay itself rather than against it. There is a sense of control that accompanies hand building work as if you have time and patience: there is nothing you cannot make.
Hand building brings a sense of comfort through the unsymmetrical nature of the vessle’s body. Throughout my life, I have been taught to learn to love imperfections and embrace the unique characteristics in life; whether that be about myself or the work that I produce. I have carried this lesson through every doubt, every insecurity and every exam. There is no doubt this logic has manifested itself into physical form of the work I create.
I explore decorative techniques in the form of sgraffito work, in order to display imagery on the clay bodies surface. Before I delved into ceramics, I worked within fine art: the foundation of my career is built upon endless paintings and drawings. When exploring ceramics, I was deluded in thinking the limits were a single glazed mug. As I expanded my limitations, I started to treat the clay surface as a blank canvas rather than the art piece itself.
