Within this work, the surface of the ceramic vases is being used as a canvas for imagery. The pattern work consists of different portraits accompanied by pint glasses of Stella Artois and cigarettes; all of which are created through sgraffito work.

The vessels push the boundaries of the relationship between vessel and decoration. As the vases inhibit characteristics of tradition vessels ( Roman inspired ), there is a stereotypical expectation that the decoration will follow the ‘formal’ narrative of the vessels form. However, these vases marry two separate forms of ceramics; traditional ceramics and modern decoration slip patterns. The combination of the classical form with the working class imagery creates a visual oxymoron.

These vases are created through hand building techniques ( coiling ), decorated with white decorative slip; with sgraffito work to showcase the imagery. Finished off with clear glaze.
